Web API allows for an easy way to extend the functionality of both an online store and other web applications. We can use it to send product data, orders and easily integrate software from different manufacturers.
Web API is a standardized method of exchanging data between different programs. This allows one program to send or receive data from another program without having to change its code. This method allows for easy extension of software functionality and customization to one's own, often individual, needs.
"WebAPI - otherwise known as a web interface from English Web Application Programming Interfaces «a standardized method of exchanging data between different programs». The WebAPI standard allows one program to send and/or receive data from another program without having to change its code. This method allows for extending software functionality and customizing it to individual needs. The user of the web interface are applications without direct human involvement." - Full description in the e-commerce dictionary: WebAPI
Even if we don't initially use the option of exchanging data between different programs, it is worth having an online store that has built-in support for the Web API system. This way, in the future we will be able to use the data collected in the store in any way we want. Data that over time becomes the most valuable part of the program.
Data imports to the store or exporting to other systems. Exchange of order data, e.g. when integrating with an invoice issuing program. Integration of deliveries, managing the offer and analyzing changes in the store, reports and many more. The possibilities are practically unlimited.
Example integrations using Web API
Thanks to Web API, we maintain data exchange compatibility between programs. Imagine that we have an integration with an accounting program that retrieves data from the store, not through Web API, but directly from the database. If the store's producer changes the program version, our integration may stop working. When we use standardized Web API methods, changes on the other side of the program are invisible to us and we maintain continuity of work.
The second important element is independence, thanks to which we can commission integration to different companies and use ready-made integrations of other companies.
